Senior Vatican Official Charged
Posted on: June 30, 2017
Cardinal George Pell, one of the highest ranking officials in the Vatican, has been charged with numerous historic sexual offences, which he will vigorously defend.
On Thursday 29th June 2017, in Melbourne, Cardinal Pell’s legal representatives were served with numerous charges of historic sexual assault offences.
Victoria Police’s Deputy Commissioner, Shane Patton, has said that there are “multiple charges” and “multiple complainants”.
Cardinal Pell, was charged on summons to attend Melbourne Magistrates on the 18th July 2017. In Patton’s statement he reassured that the process and procedures used in the charging of Cardinal Pell are the same as any other historical sexual offence charge and that he has received no preferential treatment.
Cardinal Pell, aged 76, has said he is having regular contact with Pope Francis who has granted him leave to return to Australia. He has received advice from his Doctor and legal representatives about when the trip can occur.
Cardinal Pell calls sexual abuse ‘abhorrent’ and will defend the charges vigorously. He has complained of being the subject of ‘relentless character assassination’.
He is looking forward to finally having his day in court. He called this an opportunity to clear his name and then return back to work in Rome.
