What is Child Abuse?
Child abuse is a broad term that encompasses many aspects of abuse. The abuse can be sexually, physical, emotional and neglectful. In some cases, a child may have been subjected to all four. Victims can be male or female, of any age, from any walk of life and abuse can happen in many places including Children’s Homes, Foster Care, Schools and even if the family home. Incidents can be a ‘one-off’ assault or a number of assaults and related incidents over many years. In some circumstances the abuse may come to light almost immediately, but in other cases, the abuse may be disclosed many years after the incidents.
What are the effects of Childhood Abuse?
It is now well recognised that child abuse affects the lives of the survivors of such abuse. There can be initial effects, such as the pain and trauma, and long-term effects.
In some cases a survivor of abuse may exhibit no apparent effects of the abuse and may be able to continue with their life, functioning properly on a day to day basis. However, in some cases the effects can be severe and long-standing with serious psychological and psychiatric damage and a damaging and detrimental effect on relationships, social life, education and employment.
